A hybrid vehicle, is any vehicle that uses a combination of two or more different power sources to provide drive.
Most popular at the moment are petrol-electric hybrids, where a small petrol engined car is enhanced with the inclusion of an electric motor. Some hybrid vehicles allow for recharging while parked, whereas others make use of the petrol engine to recharge when the car is not under strain.
More and more cars are being produced that only make use of an alternative power source, such as an electric battery or hydrogen fuel-cell. There range is often limited, although inroads are being made.

In South Africa only a small offering of hybrid- and pure electric vehicles are currently on offer. One of the biggest market limiting factors is the large distances needed to be covered and the lack of charging network.
